Sam Sloan and I built a 3D model of the Fosdick Nelson Gallery for our Exhibition Design class final. It was a mock proposal for a show with artists Donald Bruschi, Eleanna Anagnos and Helen Maurer.

Glass Beach

During the early 20th century residents of Fort Bragg, California chose to dispose of their waste by hurling it off the cliffs above a beach. No object was too toxic or too large as household appliances, automobiles, and all matter of trash were tossed into the crashing waves below, eventually earning it the name The Dumps. In 1967 the North Coast Water Quality Board closed the area completely and initiated a series of cleanups to slowly reverse decades of pollution and environmental damage. But there was one thing too costly (or perhaps impossible) to tackle: the millions of tiny glass shards churning in the surf. Over time the unrelenting ocean waves have, in a sense, cleansed the beach, turning the sand into a sparkling, multicolored bed of smooth glass stones now known as Glass Beach. The beach is now an unofficial tourist attraction and the California State Park System has gone so far as purchasing the property and incorporating it into surrounding MacKerricher State Park.

This is so beautiful.

And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter— they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long.

May 8th..Mother’s Day

Well, it’s been over a month and I still can’t believe it. Everything has happened so quickly in this past month, and now there’s only one more month left.

My dad came to visit on April 7th, and stayed until the 12th. And while he was here we went to the Castle, took a tour bus around the city, went on the Scotch Whisky Experience, took a tour bus up to the Highlands, and saw Loch Ness. We did a pub quiz and almost won £100. He really enjoyed it, and it was nice to have a familiar face around.

On April 15th, our Easter Holidays started off, and Amelia, Karli, Gretchen and I were on a plane to Rome at 6am. When we landed we were all still a little off, and it hadn’t really hit us that we were in Italy. We went to our hostels and got a little settled in then decided to try and see as much as possible, since we had a full day. We saw just about everything in the next 4 days. It was incredible. We had some of the best gelato in the world, and some of the best pizza.

After Rome, Amelia and I took a train to Venice. That city is unreal. It is absolutely beautiful, and doesn’t feel like it’s trying, haha. Gondolas everywhere, everybody was happy, and very friendly. We just wandered about, trying to read street signs that didn’t exist on our map. We also went to the islands of Murano, where glass is made. It was beautiful as well, but I was a little underwhelmed. The studio that we were shown, was really just for tourists, who have never seen glass blowing before, and ever shop made the same sort of things. But all the pieces were very lovely. It just felt really touristy.

After Venice we caught a midnight train to Prague, with a switch in Vienna. Unfortunately our first train was running late, so we had about 3 mins to run from one platform to the other to get our train. It was interesting, but we made it. Prague was absolutely breathtaking. The architecture there was unbelievable, and everyone was super friendly as well. The only downside to being in the Czech Republic, is not being able to speak the language. But even if you didn’t speak it, most people understood what you were trying to say, and they were very helpful. The city itself was just so relaxing, where as in Italy I constantly felt like we needed to rush to see something else, in Prague we just wandered and took our time with things. We rented a pedal boat and went out on the river for an hour. It was just the thing we needed after Italy.

Then we got a train from Prague to Amsterdam with a stop in Berlin. Unfortunately, we missed the 1st train, due to over sleeping, and the train we caught..the air conditioning broke, and it was about 75-80 degrees outside. It was a looong train ride. But we made it to Amsterdam, and it was insane. People were everywhere, and there was garbage overflowing out of the bins..not the best first impression. But we got to our hostel, and settled in a bit, then met up with the rest of the girls, Leena, Laura, Lauren, Inez, and Heather. Amelia and I grabbed dinner and then we all went out. It was a very surreal experience. Everyone was smoking pot, and cops were walking around just casually talking to people. The next day Inez, Lauren, Heather and I rented bikes and we took the ferry across the river and rode around in the country side. It was completely perfect. The city was absolutely amazing. The architecture there was very bizarre. Slight domino effect in the buildings, which just made it kind of humorous. But I was very surprised in my liking of Amsterdam.

Then from Amsterdam we made our final journey to Paris. We arrived and got to our hostel, settled in then went in search of my cousins shop. We managed to find it, and I called my grandparents so that I could try and go visit them while I was there. On Thursday we met up with my friend Hannah, who studies at Alfred, and Will arrived as well. We chatted for a couple hours, then went back to the hotel. I left early Friday morning, and made my way down to the tiny town of Thenon. Loving every minute on the train watching the beautiful countryside. Got off the train and was greeted by my grandmother, Ruth. We got to the house, and I just sat outside looking onto the fields with my grandfather, Papa. We had dinner, watched the news on the Royal Wedding, and then I went to bed. Woke up and had breakfast, and then wandered the property taking pictures, and enjoying some time with Papa. Then we all sat outside and read, and enjoyed the quite country air and the brilliant warm sun. We ate some lunch, and then I had to leave to go back up north to Paris. On my train back to Perigueux, I met a Scotsmen, and we chatted. He was very lovely, and was about to go backpacking to Spain. When I got back to Paris around 9pm, I went back to the hotel and reception was closed, so I sat outside of the room until 2am when Will and Amelia got back. Couldn’t call them from any payphone, and my phone had died, so I was just sitting and waiting, but luckily I had a book, which I almost finished while waiting there. Then I just crashed. The next day I hit up the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. It had been a while since I had seen them, so I just wandered about. Then met up with Amelia and Will and had some ice cream. It was the perfect ending. Minus the fact that Will’s passport was stolen, and we weren’t sure if he was going to be able to get onto our flight back, even though he still had his boarding pass. Very stressful time in the airport. But luckily he was able to get back, and we all made it back to Edinburgh safe and sound.

Now I’ve only got one more month left, and just about 2 more days left of school. Hand ins are on Weds by 11am, and I’m starting to stress now. I should have everything done, but slight panic is kicking in. Yay, so close and yet so far.
